Honoring Your Rhythm: Mental and Emotional Balance Through the Female Cycle
What happens to our mental and emotional world throughout the month? As women, we are not the same woman every day.

Welcome, dear sister.

In the first two parts of this series, we explored mental and emotional activity and rest, one of the six lifestyle factors of Unani Tibb. We began by looking at what this lifestyle factor actually means, and then turned inward to explore self talk and the ways our thoughts can influence our emotional and physical wellbeing.

Now I want to bring this conversation a little closer to home.

What happens to our mental and emotional world throughout the month?

As women, we are not the same woman every day.

Our bodies move through a beautiful rhythm of change. Our energy shifts. Our emotions shift. Our capacity for connection, creativity, focus, and rest can shift too.

For many women, these changes become especially noticeable in the luteal phase and during menstruation. Perhaps you have noticed that you think differently, feel differently, or respond differently to the world during these parts of your cycle.

Rather than seeing these changes as something to overcome, cycle awareness invites us to become curious about them.

It gives us another way to practice mental and emotional activity and rest.

Your Inner World Has Seasons

When I speak about mental activity, I am not simply talking about how much you think.

Mental activity is everything your mind is doing as you move through your day: planning, creating, learning, making decisions, solving problems, communicating, processing experiences, and responding to what is happening around you.

Emotional activity is happening alongside it. We are constantly experiencing, interpreting, and responding to our feelings and the world around us.

These are living processes. They require energy. And just as our physical energy can change throughout the menstrual cycle, our mental and emotional energy can change too. There may be times when you feel naturally more outward, social, expressive, and mentally energized. There may be other times when you become more reflective, sensitive, inward, or aware of things that you had previously moved past. Neither is better than the other. Activity and rest are meant to complement one another.

The question is not how we can remain in one state all month. The question is how we can become aware of where we are and respond with greater intention.

The Follicular Phase: Mental Energy and New Ideas

As we move out of menstruation and into the follicular phase, many women begin to notice a gentle return of energy.

You may feel more mentally clear, curious, social, creative, or ready to begin something new. Ideas may come more easily. You may feel more motivated to make plans, learn something, solve a problem, or take on a project that you had little interest in before.

This can be a beautiful time for mental activity.

Perhaps there is a book you want to read, something you want to create, a conversation you have been meaning to have, or an idea that has been waiting for your attention.

But even when our energy is rising, balance still matters. It can be tempting to fill every open space in your calendar because you feel capable of doing more. But your energy today is not necessarily the energy you will have two weeks from now.

So instead of asking yourself only: “What can I accomplish?” perhaps ask: “What is worth giving my energy to?”

Ovulation: Connection, Expression, and Outward Energy

Around ovulation, many women notice another expression of mental and emotional activity.

You may feel more social, communicative, confident, expressive, or interested in connecting with others. You may find yourself wanting to collaborate, teach, share your ideas, spend time with people you love, or simply be more present in the world around you.

Your mental energy may feel expansive. This can be a wonderful time to engage with the world. But there is something important to remember here too. When we feel capable and energized, we can sometimes say yes to everything. We take on another responsibility. We make another commitment. We fill another space. And eventually, our future selves are left carrying what our present selves agreed to.

Cycle awareness allows us to enjoy our outward energy without forgetting that rest will also come.

The Luteal Phase: When the Inner World Becomes Louder

For many women, the luteal phase is where the conversation around mental and emotional wellbeing becomes especially important.

As we move through this phase, some women notice increased sensitivity, irritability, anxiety, sadness, cravings, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or a stronger desire to withdraw.

You may notice yourself thinking more about a conversation that happened days ago.

Something that seemed small may suddenly feel much bigger.

You may become more aware of what is bothering you.

Your patience may feel shorter.

Your self talk may become more critical.

Or perhaps you simply feel like you have less capacity for everything that normally fills your day.

These experiences can be frustrating, particularly when you feel like you are supposed to continue functioning at the same pace.

But this is an opportunity to pause and listen.

What is happening within me right now?

Sometimes what we experience during this phase is simply part of the natural changes of the cycle. Sometimes our heightened sensitivity also reveals something that needs our attention.

An unresolved emotion.

An overextended schedule.

A relationship that needs a boundary.

A thought pattern that has become exhausting.

A need for more sleep.

The goal is not to assume that every feeling is a message or that every emotion needs to be acted upon.

The goal is to become curious enough to listen before reacting.

Menstruation: Reflection and Turning Inward

Then we arrive at menstruation.

For many women, this can be a time when energy naturally turns inward.

You may feel less interested in social stimulation. You may want more quiet. You may find yourself reflecting on the weeks that have passed or noticing emotions and experiences that you did not have the space to process before.

This is still mental activity. It simply looks different.

Mental activity is not always productivity, problem solving, or doing.

Sometimes mental activity is reflection. Sometimes it is allowing yourself to process. Sometimes it is sitting quietly enough to hear what has been drowned out by the noise of everyday life. And sometimes the most supportive thing you can offer your mind is simply space.

If we continue demanding the same level of productivity and mental output from ourselves while our bodies are asking us to slow down, we may experience mental fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or a sense of depletion.

Rest is not the absence of activity.

Rest gives us the space to integrate what we have experienced.

What Is Your Cycle Telling You?

There is also a spiritual layer to your inner dialogue.

When Shaytan cannot lead a person toward sin, he distracts them with what is unnecessary. One of the greatest distractions is becoming consumed by the past or anxious about the future.

A grounded and healthy heart lives in the present.

When you return to the present moment, your thoughts become clearer, calmer, and more aligned with your fitra.

Simple practices such as beginning your day with dua, moving with intention, and practicing gratitude can gently reshape your self talk over time.

These are not just actions. They are ways of anchoring your mind, heart, and spirit.

One Practice: Begin a Cycle Awareness Journal

If you are not sure where to begin, keep a simple cycle awareness journal for one or two cycles.

Each day, take a few moments to ask:

Mental: How is my focus, clarity, and mental energy?

Emotional: What am I feeling today?

Physical: How are my sleep, digestion, appetite, and physical energy?

Needs: What does my body, mind, and spirit seem to need today?

You do not need pages of writing.

A few words are enough.

Over time, you may begin to see your own patterns more clearly.

And once you can see a pattern, you have something to work with.

A Gentle Reflection

There is something deeply meaningful about realizing that we were created with rhythm.

The natural world moves through periods of light and darkness, growth and stillness, activity and rest.

So do we.

For a woman of faith, cycle awareness can become more than a practice of tracking symptoms. It can become a practice of listening. Of noticing the body Allah has entrusted to us. Of remembering that our worth does not increase when we are productive or decrease when we need to rest.

Mental and emotional balance is not about feeling calm all the time.

It is about awareness.

It is about learning when to engage and when to pause.

When to process and when to release.

When to move outward and when to turn inward.

And perhaps most importantly, it is about learning to meet yourself where you are rather than constantly asking yourself to be somewhere else.
