Welcome, dear sister.
In your journey toward health and balance, it is easy to focus only on what you eat, how you move, or how you rest physically. But in Unani Tibb, true wellness also depends on something more subtle, yet deeply powerful—your mental and emotional state.
The six lifestyle factors of Unani Tibb serve as a compass for whole health. Each factor is presented in pairs, reminding us that balance is never found in extremes. Just as there is activity, there must also be rest. Just as there is movement, there must also be stillness.
One of the most important of these is mental and emotional activity and rest, known as Harkat e Nafsaniyah.
Why the Mind and Emotions Are Connected
Your thoughts and emotions are not separate. They move together, constantly influencing one another.
At times, a thought may lead to a feeling. At other times, an emotion may arise first and shape your thoughts. What matters is not which comes first, but the awareness that they are deeply connected.
When your mental and emotional states are in harmony, you experience clarity, ease, and connection. When they are out of balance, you may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected from yourself.
The Balance Between Activity and Rest
Your inner world is always in motion. You are thinking, processing, reacting, and feeling throughout the day.
This is mental and emotional activity.
But just as your body requires rest, your mind and heart also need space to pause, reflect, and reset.
Mental and emotional rest includes moments of stillness, reflection, mindfulness, and presence. It is in these moments that the mind is able to soften and the heart is able to settle.
When there is too much activity without rest, the mind becomes overstimulated. Thoughts may become repetitive, heavy, or overwhelming. This can lead to a sense of stagnation, where you feel stuck in one mental or emotional state.
Balance is found when your mind is able to move and process, but also to pause and release.
A Woman’s Rhythm: Honoring Your Natural Flow
As women, our mental and emotional energy is not constant. It moves in rhythms and cycles, just like our bodies.
There are times when you may feel focused, creative, and outward. And there are times when your body calls you inward toward rest, reflection, and stillness.
Both states are necessary, and both are signs of a healthy, responsive system.
Honoring these shifts allows you to support your body and mind with compassion rather than resistance. When you allow yourself rest without guilt, and activity without overwhelm, you begin to move in alignment with your natural rhythm.
How This Affects Your Physical Health
Your mental and emotional state does not exist in isolation. It directly impacts your physical body.
Excessive stress, worry, or unresolved emotions can disturb digestion, affect bowel movements, and create tension within the body. Over time, this can influence your energy, sleep, and overall wellbeing.
On the other hand, a balanced mental state supported by mindfulness, reflection, and intentional living helps regulate the body and build resilience.
The Spiritual Connection
There is also a deeper layer to this lifestyle factor—your spiritual state.
Your spiritual health guides your heart, mind, and body. When your spirit is nourished, your thoughts tend to be clearer, more grounded, and more aligned with goodness.
Thoughts rooted in service, gratitude, clarity, and creativity are often a reflection of a well nurtured spirit.
When we neglect our spiritual practices, the mind can become more easily overwhelmed, distracted, or unsettled.
Caring for your spirit through prayer, remembrance, reflection, and intentional living helps bring balance to your mental and emotional state.
A Gentle Invitation to Reflect
Take a moment to pause and reflect on your own inner state.
Are you constantly engaging your mind without allowing it to rest?
Are your thoughts supportive and aligned with your values, or do they feel heavy and overwhelming?
Are you creating space for stillness, reflection, and spiritual connection in your day?
Awareness is the first step toward balance.
In the next part of this series, we will explore how your thoughts shape your experience, and how you can begin to gently guide your inner dialogue toward clarity and ease.
با آرزوى سلامتى و آرامش
Wishing you peace and good health,
Shabana
